East Carolina University has temporarily paused all athletic activities effective Wednesday, July 15, according to a press release by the university on Tuesday. This decision stems from a recent grouping of positive COVID-19 tests among student-athletes, coaches and staff.

“The health and safety of our student-athletes is our top priority and today’s decision comes in consultation with our medical staff,” ECU Athletic Director Jon Gilbert said in the release. “We have preformed 452 COVID-19 tests with student-athletes, coaches and staff. Twenty-seven positive tests have been confirmed and five of the 27 have recovered.”

The release states that all ECU athletic facilities and practice fields will be closed during this time. Individuals who tested positive will self-isolate and receive daily monitoring from ECU athletics medical staff, the release said.

With the announcement, ECU joins a growing list of athletic departments that have suspended on-campus workouts stemming from COVID-19. To date, about 5.9% of total tests have come back positive of the Pirates.
