On Thursday, East Carolina University’s athletic department confirmed its first positive COVID-19 case. According to a release from the university, the department conducted 68 tests for coronavirus among returning student-athletes, coaches and staff on Tuesday. One of those cases came back positive.
In all, the release said 133 student-athletes and 59 staff have been tested for coronavirus, with all other tests coming back negative.
The individual that tested positive will be isolated for 14 days and will “receive daily monitoring from ECU Athletics medical staff,” according to the release.
As part of its phased approach for welcoming student-athletes back on campus, all players are subjected to a coronavirus test as part of the week-long process for preparing for the resumption of workouts. Student-athletes are also advised on sanitation requirements and proper protocols for athletic facilities that are open at this time.
